  • Wally Lake Fest 2013 takes place this weekend, with a big assortment of activities celebrating life in Hawley and the nearby Lake Wallenpaupack region. With favorable weather, thousands of people are anticipated.
A guide placed in Wednesdays' News Eagle highlights the Wally Lake Fest calendar. Detailed brochures with maps are available at various locations and the full schedule is posted on line at wallylakefest.com.
Keith Williams, who is actively involved with the Downtown Hawley Partnership (DHP) committee organizing the event, said that each year they learn more. They listen to comments from the public of what could have been done better or what they would like to see. The fourth annual event incorporates some new items and improvements, with numerous favorite activities held before.
Just a few activities need prior registration. To be part of the Boat Parade, you need to call 226-4518 to enter your decorated boat. Chant Realtors is the sponsor. There is a $1,000 first place prize and several more. Sunday is the rain date. The boat parade starts at 4 p.m. at Shuman Point and winds around to pass by Tafton Dike and the judges, a short while later.
Of course no reservations are needed to come and watch the boats! Good places to see the decorated boats are along the top of Tafton Dike and nearby Wallenpaupack Lake Trail and Palmyra Township Public Beach as well as from your own boat.
Something new this year, Northeast Wilderness Experience will be renting tubes to float out on the lake for a half day or full day. Watch the boat parade or get up closer to the "Battle of the Bands" floating stage. The tubes are rented at the public beach, where they also have kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals.
The popular Battle of the Bands was first held last year, but had only one style of music. To broaden interest, Williams said that this year three bands will play, each with a different genre. There will be a large tent near the beach this year where you may sit in the shade to hear the music.
Register ahead for the second annual "Ride for the Lake" which brings motorcycle enthusiasts together for the good cause of protecting the lake water quality. Bikers will travel a 41 mile path around Lake Wallenpaupack starting at 10 a.m. at Wallenpaupack Area High School. Call the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District at 226-3865 to register. Sunday is the rain date.
Another event requiring pre-registration is the Lego Building Contest, held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Wallenpaupack Area High School. There is a $15 registration fee and chidren 5-12 must be pre-registered; call 226-4941. Wayne County Builders hosts this event. There are two age groups, and 1s, 2nd and 3rd place Lego-related prizes.
Page 2 of 2 - Free sailboat rides also required reservations, but Williams reports that the event is already filled, with a waiting list! Lighthouse Harbor Marina and Paupack Sailing Club are the hosts.
While talking about sailboats, come and see the Sailboat Regatta, which starts at 12 noon on Sunday in front of Tafton Dike. Paupack Sailing Club races from one end of the lake to the other.
Free shuttles will be available to get people from the lake and around Hawley and back.
PPL dam and power plant tours will be offered Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There are many other activities, from Friday evening to Sunday.
Generating interest in the community, bringing many partners together for a common cause and giving yet another reason to enjoy the area and its many commercial, cultural, natural and recreational resources, Wally Lake Fest is made possible by a huge commitment and cooperative community. Numerous local businesses step up and help underwrite expenses. Lighthouse Harbor Marina is the top sponsor.
Serving on the DHP Wally Lake Fest Committee are Rory and Sarah O'Fee, Bridget Gelderman, Justin Genzlinger and Keith Williams.
"Good weather is the key," Williams said. "We plan and hope for the best with the weather." Some events are held on Sunday as well and certain Saturday events have Sunday rain dates. Other activities are held inside, such as Ice Works Factory Tour & Ice Museum in Lakeville, and musical entertainment planned at various restaurants.
