  • - At the regular meeting of the Western Wayne School Board Monday night, a new athletic director was appointed and many contracts were awarded.

     - At the regular meeting of the Western Wayne School Board Monday night, a new athletic director was appointed and many contracts were awarded.
    The board voted on whether or not to appoint Brian T. Kelly, CPA & Associates as the audit firm for basic audit services. The appointment would be for the years ending in June 30, 2013, 2014 and 2015 and would come at a cost of $21,400 per year. Seven board members voted yes, with vice president Donald McDonough voting against the appointment.
    Various construction change orders were also approved at the meeting. Mar-Paul Construction, Inc., will be working on three projects in the district. The first is to furnish and install additional VCT, carpet, tile and cove base in the corridor and office areas for $4,310.77. The second project is furnish and install additional two inch tees and ceiling tile "in area adjacent to waiting area 103 and reception area 102," for a sum of $1,436.09. The third project is to raise two masonry piers "at the rear of the library" for $2,817.80.
    A change order related to the construction of EverGreen Elementary was awarded to FS Mechanical-HVAC "for providing temporary heat beyond the scope of the contract" for an additional sum of $18,714.13.
    The sale of the Lake Elementary School Building was also discussed. The board recommended to allow solicitor Matthew Meagher to "petition the Wayne County Court" for the private sale of the structure to Jbas Reality for "the consideration of $75,000" with no contingencies. Seven board members voted yes, with board member Doris Pliss voting no.
    The district also welcomed multiple new appointments to the fold.
    Cara Gavin was hired as a temporary professional employee, early intervention teacher with a salary of $44,083 with applicable fringe benefits.
    Dorisa Minor was also appointed as a long-term substitute at a salary of $44,083, with applicable fringe benefits.
    Cynthia LaRosa was appointed to serve as the Assistant Director of Special Education, effective upon release of previous employment, at a salary of $65,000.
    Paul Gregorski was appointed to serve as the High School Dean of Students, at no additional salary or benefits for the upcoming school year.
    Cindy Rizzi was appointed to serve as the new Athletic Director for the upcoming year, at her current hourly rate.
    Coaching
    Changes to the coaching staff of many fall sports were also on the agenda.
    The board accepted the resignation of Steve Barnoski as assistant football coach, John Fahrenbach as the girls varsity soccer coach and Patti Walker as the girls varsity assistant soccer coach for the upcoming school year.
    The following coaches were hired at the following rates for the 2013-2014 school year:

    • Tammy Hess, basketball cheerleading, $3,369
    • Brian Hodorawis, girls junior high basketball coach, $3,690

    Special meetings
    Multiple special meetings were held by the board over recent weeks.
    At a special meeting held June 19, all members of the Western Wayne School Board voted unanimously to adopt the 2013-14 budget "showing estimated available resources of $41,627,629" and estimated "ending fund balance of $41,627,629." The budget also establishes real estate tax millage at 14.915, with a two percent discount "if the whole amount of the tax" is paid within two months after the date of the notice. A penalty of 10 percent will be levied if the tax is not paid within four months of the date the notice was issued.
    The employment agreement negotiated between Superintendent Clay LaCoe was also approved by the board at the June 19 special meeting. The agreement is effective July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2018.
    At a July 8 special meeting, Patrick J. Sheehan was elected to serve as assistant superintendent for a five-year term. At a July 15 special meeting of the board, Matthew Barrett was appointed to serve as acting high school principal "at a salary of $84,500 with applicable fringe benefits."
    Other business
    • The dual enrollment agreement between Lackawanna College and the Western Wayne School District was approved for the upcoming school year.
    • The contract for extra-curricular transportation was awarded to Gary Jenkins at a rate of $2.89 per mile with a minimum mileage of $84.17 and a waiting time at the hourly rate of $11.18.
    • The board approved an agreement between the district and Victims' Intervention Program (VIP) for the upcoming school year at a cost of $2,500.
    The next meeting of the Western Wayne School Board will be held Monday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
