By now I'm sure most of you have heard about CrossFit. What the heck is that you ask? Well, CrossFit is a way to constantly challenge your body. It's not easy by any means, but can be modified to allow for different fitness levels or outstanding injuries. This makes it a wonderful tool to use if you ever need a fresh start.
CrossFit was started in 2000 by Greg Glassman as a “broad, general & inclusive” workout designed to keep you on your toes. Classes are made up of exercises that include lifting weights, running, rowing, and squatting. The goal is to incorporate your whole body. Each class is a mix of different fitness levels, with beginners going through exercises beforehand with a certified trainer so as not to injure themselves. They might begin by using only the bar to learn how their body is supposed to move before adding explosive movements and speed.
CrossFit encompasses exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, power cleans, burpees, lunges, squats, L-sits, box jumps, double unders, wall ball shots (think throwing a weighted medicine ball at the wall w/squats), and kettlebell swings just to name a few. Like we mentioned before, don't be intimidated. It's the trainer's job to show you alternate exercises or get the correct weight for you so you don't hurt yourself. They don't expect you to walk in off the street and start throwing around 100 lb kettlebells. They understand not everyone is the same. This workout is definitely NOT one size fits all. They are constantly changing the workout so your body can grow by way of strength, agility, and endurance. Now, on the other hand, let's take a look at some risks that might be a concern. First off, CrossFit uses explosive olympic lifts so you will have to make sure you get your form and technique down. Also, when your body gets tired, your form and technique may be the first things to suffer. Be sure you are always conscious of how your body feels. If something hurts, stop and re-evaluate your body mechanics, something needs to be tweaked. Make sure you drink plenty of water and start slow. You can always progress, its re-gressing we want to avoid. Along with the workouts, CrossFit encourages certain diets. Remember, be sure you get all your whole grains, and nutrients in. If you are exercising, your body will require a balanced diet. If anything is lacking, your body may not be able to perform the way its supposed to, nor the way you want it to.
