If you go to SAM’s Club you see pallets and pallets for canning jars. You may think to yourself that you don’t have the time to can, or you can’t even think about doing it because it’s probably so hard. This week we are going to tell you some of the benefits to canning to hopefully help you enjoy your harvest even after the season is over.

What is canning? Canning is the preserving of food. The food is processed and sealed in an air tight container. Canning can provide a typical shelf life between one to five years, depending on the circumstances. Canning has many benefits as well.

There has been rising concern over BPA in commercial canned foods. BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics. When you can foods you are avoiding those harmful chemicals that are used in commercial canned foods. There are no harmful additives. The only things going into the can are the things that you put in there.

Canning is great for the environment. It reduces the waste of pre-packed foods because the canning jars are reusable. Instead of your tomato sauce traveling across the country it only travels from your counter to the pantry. This cuts down the amount of trucks on the road pushing out all those harmful exhaust fumes.

Are you a little pressed for cash this week and are caving some fresh peaches? Well don’t turn to the super market and drain your account dry. Turn to your cupboard where you keep your canned peaches from last year. Canning has many financial benefits. In the middle of the winter when you are paying top price for fruit that is out of season; turn to your canned fruit. This can save you some mega bucks in the long run.

Another way that canning can save you some money is giving jams and jellies as gifts. Nothing says I’m thinking of you, I love you, or happy holidays like a jar of something homemade. Just think, you won’t have to waste your time in stores trying to find that perfect gift. Just turn to your cupboard and pick out that special jelly. This will also save you a ton of money in gas, the actual gift and wrapping. It will also save you TIME!!

These are only a few benefits to canning. Why not start canning today? For more information, contact the Wayne County YMCA at (570) 253-2083, or visit us online at ymcawayne.com.
