  • Hawley, Pennsylvania is one of 20 towns across the United States and Canada selected by Benjamin Moore & Co. for a painting make-over.
Results of the company's "Main Street Matters" contest were announced online, July 8th. Someone had nominated Hawley, which became one of 100 communities over the past month where the public could cast a vote at the company web site.
"That's wonderful," said Elaine Herzog, Borough Councilwoman and active member of Downtown Hawley Partnership (DHP), upon hearing the news. "It's a good fit for the town- every time you can improve your curb appeal is a good thing." She said this painting opportunity should enhance the recent facade grant program which enabled some Hawley business people to upgrade the front exterior of their buildings.
Who nominated Hawley is still unclear. The public was invited to vote once a day through June 30th. Word spread fast through social media.
The next nearest winning town is Nyack, New York. Narrowsburg had been one of the finalists, but was not picked.
"I just think its a prime of example of the things we can achieve when we pull together for the love of our town," said Jill Carletti, a local artist and Creative Director of Harmony Presents. "We have a very special community full of caring, hardworking and smart people. I think, in a way, our strength is in our small size - everyone knows each other and the teams that do best know each other best."
Details of how the company promotion will work remain vague. The announcement online states, "We'll be working with each town over the next year with the help of local Benjamin Moore retailers and local painting contractors. Throughout the process, we'll be reporting back about the projects and the people we meet along the way so come back here to keep following the story."
The company plans to have this promotion annually, and invites communities to try again in 2014 if they were not picked this time.
