It hasn't been an easy road to victory. Saturday was Bartoli's 47th Grand Slam event, more than any other champion before winning. She only ever reached the final once before, six years ago and hasn't won any tournament since 2011.
"For a tennis player, you start to play like at 5 or 6 years old," Bartoli said. "When you decide to turn pro, your dream is to win a Grand Slam. You dream about it every day. You think about every day. So when it happens, when it actually happens, you feel like, you know, you achieve something that you dream about for maybe million of hours."
Bartoli's victory marks the first time a woman with both a two-handed forehand and backhand has won Wimbledon and the first to win the Grand Slam without beating a top-10 seed. The highest seed she faced was American Sloan Stephens, seeded 17th.
