First there was Jazzercise, then there was Dance Aerobics, then Zumba, and now.....Piloxing? What is this newest installment of exercise aimed at having fun while working out? Dancing is a great aerobic workout so when a workout is focused on it you know you'll be getting your heart and body into shape in what feels like no time because you are enjoying it so much! So what exactly is this Piloxing?
According to piloxing.com, Piloxing combines boxing and pilates in addition to adding some dance moves in there for some extra core and whole body work. As they put it: “PILOXING blends the power, speed and agility of boxing with the beautiful sculpting and flexibility of Pilates. Add to that [some] fun and sexy dance moves. The exercise [also] incorporates the use of weighted gloves which add to the workout by toning the arms and maximizing cardiovascular health. ” It was created by a Swedish dancer, Vivica Jensen who's goal it is to both physically and mentally empower women through fitness. This is how Piloxing is different than other workouts, it is made especially for women. “At the core of PILOXING is the principle that feminine is powerful and it aims for women to attain a sleek, sexy and powerful self-image.”
So let's take a look at some things to watch out for if you are trying Piloxing for the first time. You may want to check out a few videos before taking a class so you familiarize yourself with the moves. If you need to modify the workout to meet your own physical requirements, by all means do so. The moves are quick, so make sure you've mastered EXACTLY how they are to be executed before adding speed to them. Don't move as fast as the rest of the class if you are just beginning. You will get there soon enough, no use hurting yourself early on. You're there to enjoy the class as well as get a good workout, not associate the workout with injury! That would be terrible. If yo have questions about how to modify, be sure to get to the class early so you can ask the instructor how to do so in the safest way. When you add the weighted gloves to the routine, be EXTRA careful! Do not fully extend your arm, keep your elbow soft. Don't punch too hard. If needed, go slow for a while before increasing your speed. Yes, this sounds like a broken record, but better that than a broken body! Happy Piloxing!
