  • - The Sanctuary of Oils in Honesdale will be hosting a reading with Mermer Blakeslee and Tom Lisenbee on Friday, July 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
    Blakeslee will be reading from her most recent novel, When You Live by a River (Narrative Library, 2012), a fictional story of a 1931 Catskill Mountains valley community soon to be flooded to create a reservoir for New York City. Described as “an eloquent testament to the persistence and courage of the heart,” When you Live by a River is Blakeslee's third novel.
    A writer, skier, teacher and gardener from Roscoe, N.Y., Blakeslee's earlier novels are Same Blood (Houghton Mifflin, 1989), and In Dark Water (Ballantine, 1998). Mermer was awarded three New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships in fiction. Leenie, an excerpt from her latest novel, won the 2006 Narrative prize from Narrative magazine.
    Tom Lisenbee will open the evening with a selection of poetry. A member of the Upper Delaware Writers' Collective, he is the recipient of the 2009 Richard Bausch Short Story Prize, and Honorable Mention, 2009 Mulberry Poets Poetry Prize. He has has performed his poety throughout Northern Pennsylvania and in New York City, and published two poetry chapbooks, Dogwalking and Three From Osage Street.
    Lisenbee retired from his 20-year career as principal trumpet player for the NYC Opera and American Ballet Theatre and turned to writing poetry and fiction in 2001.
