  •  - The eighth annual Roots & Rhythm Festival was well attended by locals and tourists alike.
"Throughout the day, we had at least 6,000 people attend," said Gail Tucker, executive director of the Greater Honesdale Partnership. "It was absolutely awesome."
The event began at 10:30 a.m. with seven bands rocking main street until the bands took the main stage in Honesdale's Central Park.
The main stage opened with the singing of the national anthem by 17-year-old Honesdale High School senior Leah Schweighofer. In her junior year, Schweighofer attended the PMEA District 9 chorus festival and the Region 4 chorus festival for two years.
This year, she will be studying at the Jon Frederick West Summer Institute in opera repertoire.
The annual Airing of the Quilts was also held during the Roots & Rhythm event Saturday. The quilts were on display throughout Honesdale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These huggable works of art were hung from buildings lining Main Street.
The ever popular Tunes & Tales event was packed with children taking advantage of face painting and glitter tattoos.
The park was packed with eager listeners for not just headliner Jimmy Vivino and the Barn Burners, but for all of the bands that day.
"This is the biggest crowd we have ever had," said Tucker.
In past events, the crowd would fluctuate depending on what band was on the main stage. This year, "so many people stayed for the whole thing."
The many galleries and artists were also bustling with many spectators stopping in to see what art they had to offer. The special section had art ranging from beaded necklaces to all-natural, handcrafted soaps. "The vendors were busy all day," she said.
Tucker also would like to thank "all of our sponsors and all of the people that come to the event and make it possible."
