- The recent addition to the Pleasant Mount Library was revealed formally to the public on April 20 with a ribbon cutting, refreshments and visits from favorite literary characters.
The idea for the addition has been on the radar for library lovers for years.
"It's been in the works for more than a dozen years," said Pleasant Mount Library Board of Trustees President Joyce Malicky. Through years of fundraising, the library was able to save up around $40,000 for the addition.
The construction began in November 2012 and moved swiftly, with books being moved into the new space around mid-January. The addition added around 728 square feet of space to the original 700 square feet of reading room.
Malicky said now that "we have a nice space, we are excited to have the space" to have new and returning programs available for bookworms in the area.
"There really isn't a lot in Pleasant Mount that is open as often as we are," Malicky said. "We are open the most for the public."
The list of events is growing at the library, with a returning favorite being the summer reading program. Other exciting events involve a possible tea party and Learning Hour at the Library.
The Learning Hour is presented every Friday night from 5:30-6:30 p.m. by Lila Sampson-Urban. The hour will have interactive story time and segments on word identification and learning letters and numbers. The hour will also have an arts and crafts section and school readiness preparation.
For older children, there will be homework help available from two Forest City Regional school students from grades seven and 10. They will help children with homework and studying.
Malicky said the addition was made possible by "lots of in kind services" from community members, as well as monetary donations.
"The addition is around 80 percent paid off already," she said.
The Friends of the Pleasant Mount Library are "part of why the library is so successful today," she added. The grand opening celebration had bibliophiles in the area vying for a chance to win one of they many gift baskets while participating in the logo contest.
Page 2 of 2 - Another bonus of the library is it is part of the Wayne County Library Authority, which allows it to bring services available at other branches to those in the rural community. Some of those services is the ever-popular Freading, which allows those with an e-reader the ability to check out virtual books to read on their device.
"We have everything the larger libraries do, just on a smaller scale," Malicky said.
The addition is handicap accessible and is open to the public. The Pleasant Mount Library is open Tuesday from noon-6 p.m.; Wednesday 1-7 p.m.; Thursday noon-6 p.m.; Friday 1-7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
