-On Tuesday Sweet Susie's, formerly known as Philadelphia Water Ice, had a soft opening and the public was welcome to get some ice cream.
Sweet Susie's is located at 112 C 10th Street and is owned by Dawn Crum. It was named after her mom. Crum is originally from Louisiana and later moved to the area. She was a teacher for 16 years and now substitute teaches at the Wayne Highlands School District.
"Through knowing different people in the area, the opportunity was introduced to me," Crum said.
The ice cream shop will offer Philadelphia water ice, hand-dipped Haagen Dazs, soft serve and gelati starting today. There will also be novelty ice pops available in Spongebob, Hello Kitty and Spiderman.
Later this week sundaes, milkshakes, Susie Q's (flurries) and handmade ice cream sandwiches will be added.
"We're hoping to have a grand opening with full product by next week," said Crum. "It's very exciting. There's much more to it than I realized. I learned a lot but I still have a lot more to learn. It's fun and it's neat interacting with people. I'm excited to be part of the Greater Honesdale Partnership. They've helped guide me in the right direction."
Ten percent of each day's sales will be donated to Abraham House, the Honesdale public skate park and other charities.
"I'm not doing this for the recognition," she said. "I very strongly feel this is something God wants me to do and I want to share the blessings I've been given. I think this is the direction God has in store for my life."
Crum gave a big shout out to her husband Matthew as well.
"I want to give him a massive thank you," she said. "Without all of his hard work this never would have happened. He patiently put hours upon hours into it and never complained, got aggravated or mad. He's a wonderful blessing in my life and he's good looking, which is an added plus."
Sweet Susie's is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. On special occasions or as needed, the hours will be extended.
