In our last blog we talked about people being “unhealthy.” With this word come certain stereotypes that I’m planning on squashing in this blog. Oftentimes, “unhealthy” is used synonymously with “fat”. This is untrue. Just because someone is a larger person doesn’t mean they aren’t fit or healthy. Genetics is a HUGE factor in body type. In fact, there are plenty of cases where skinny people are much less healthy than bigger people. This has become such a common occurrence that there is now a term to describe it. “Metabolically Obese Normal Weight” or MONW refers to “skinny fat” people. This condition makes it very clear that being bigger and fit is better than being thinner and out of shape.
Metabolically obese; what is this crazy term? Metabolically obese refers to the combination of certain risk factors. A few prevalent factors being high levels of insulin resistance, high triglycerides, hypertension, and/or cardiovascular disease. High levels of insulin resistance can lead to pre-diabetes, which could then turn into diabetes itself. A skinny fat person is small, yet untoned. Meaning they have little muscle definition, and are in fact more fat than muscle. The truth is, 1 in 4 people have pre-diabetes and are “metabolically obese” according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. The main idea here is that these factors are blind to whether a person is fat or thin. Studies done by the Cooper Institute prove that being fat and fit is better, health wise, than being thin and unfit. According to a recent study done by the University of Sydney, this could be due to the fact that when fat is stored around the liver it does the most metabolic damage. They go on to state that regular aerobic exercise reduces fat in the liver while it may not result it weight loss.
The remedy for this condition? It's easy, exercise! Any kind of exercise is great! Whether it be an aerobic or weight bearing workout. Yoga or specific conditioning. Anything is better than nothing. Remember to switch it up so you don't get bored. This will also help you get in the best shape. What I'm trying to say here is that no matter your shape, size, skin-color, fitness level, or history... EXERCISE. Do it to get and stay healthy, and you'll find those clothes you've been working to get in will soon fit. Don't think that just because someone is thin they are healthy or that those that are large are unhealthy.
