Family media brand Highlights for Children, Inc., recently honored Honesdale resident Kent L. Brown Jr. and Mullin, Texas, resident Shirley Wendlandt for their 35 years of service on the Highlights board of directors. Brown and Wendlandt retire from the board this month.

— Family media brand Highlights for Children, Inc., recently honored Honesdale resident Kent L. Brown Jr. and Mullin, Texas, resident Shirley Wendlandt for their 35 years of service on the Highlights board of directors. Brown and Wendlandt retire from the board this month.
As board members, Brown and Wendlandt provided leadership and stewardship for the company and the Myers family. They were instrumental in developing a rotating board program that provides board experience for the 13-member third generation of the Myers family and now the 27-member fourth generation.
Brown also served as editor of Highlights magazine from 1980 to 2001. Wendlandt held many leadership positions on the board, including leading the voting trust.
"We believe it is important that the family members know all about Highlights, its mission, how it is run and how it is doing," says Wendlandt.
During their tenure on the board of directors, Highlights has transitioned from a beloved children's publisher into an international, multi-channel family media brand.
Today, the company offers multiple magazines, book clubs, digital apps and retail products.
"Any long time period is one of great change, and I am proud of the job that the family council and the board have done in aligning new ventures with the Highlights philosophy," says Brown.
"Kent and Shirley made an enormous contribution to Highlights and its board of directors by representing the family and its vision in all deliberations of the board. Those of us from outside the family learned about the Myers family and its unique role in one of this country's most cherished brands for children. Kent and Shirley always put the needs and concerns of children first in their responsibilities as members of the Highlights board," said John Temple, independent director, Highlights for Children, and chairman of Guideposts.
"Watching Kent, Shirley and other board members as they mentored and led the family and the business inspired me to join this company," said Highlights Chief Executive Officer Kent Johnson, a great-grandson of the company's founders.
Brown continues to be highly engaged in the mission of serving children. He remains the head of the Highlights Foundation, a nonprofit that works on improving the quality of children's literature by helping authors and illustrators hone their craft.
Wendlandt is currently a resident of Mullin, Texas, but remains deeply tied to the Honesdale community. She and Kent grew up spending summers in Boyds Mills with their grandparents, Highlights founders Dr. Garry Cleveland Myers and Caroline Clark Myers.
