  • Pleasant pillowcases for children needing cheer

    • email print
  • - The quilters of Wayne County have been busy stitching up a storm at Mountain Quiltworks, located just off of Route 652.
Owner Amy Dunn has been participating in ConKerr Cancer since March 2009. Since that time, she says quilters in the area have "donated around 2,000 pillowcases" to the cause.
ConKerr Cancer began in 2002 when Cindy Kerr began sewing bright and colorful pillowcases for her son, Ryan, who suffered from cancer. The children in the hospital enjoyed the cheerful pillowcases so much, Kerr began making them for other children. Even after his death, the organization continued to grow.
Dunn says that many area individual quilters, and groups like Trackside Quilters and Friends with a Heart in Lackawaxen and stretches "as far as Narrowsburg, NY." She estimates in those organizations alone, "around 30 people" are consistently constructing the items.
While Dunn doesn't craft as many pillowcases herself, she has made her shop a drop off station for those who make them. She "donates all the postage" to mail the finished products to the facility located in Wayne, PA.
The local spread of the ConKerr Cancer organization has largely been "by word of mouth" from quilter to fellow quilter. If you are sewing impaired, there are other ways to help. "Many people donate funds" that go toward buying materials needed to mail them. You can also always donate fabric to be used to make a pillowcase.
The construction of the pillowcase is "easy and quick," she says, adding that "kids love making them."
While the pillowcases can be made out of any bright and fun fabric, Dunn said "cotton is preferred" because it is more sterile and hypoallergenic than other fabrics.
Mountain Quiltworks is open every Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and will accept donations during business hours. If you would like to find out more about ConKerr Cancer, you can visit www.conkerrcancer.org or stop by Mountain Quiltworks for a brochure.
