  • — A correctional officer at the federal prison in South Canaan has died after being stabbed by an inmate.
Officer Eric Williams, 34, of Nanticoke, was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m., Monday following the incident.
According to public information officer Kim Straesser, the incident took place while Williams was working in a housing unit at the prison.
Straesser would not say what time the incident happened because the case is under investigation. She did say the prisoners are all locked into their cells at 10 p.m. each evening and not allowed out until 6 a.m. the next morning.
The cells are part of a housing unit at the prison.
The report says that Williams was assaulted by an inmate using a homemade weapon. Members of the staff responded immediately and restrained the inmate.
Williams was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:30 p.m.
Straesser said officials are not yet releasing which hospital the officer was taken to after he was assaulted.
"This is clearly the darkest day in our institution's short history and we are in shock over this senseless loss of a colleague and friend," said warden David Ebbert.
The federal prison at South Canaan opened in March of 2005.
Williams began his career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Sept. 11, 2011.
Straesser did say that Williams lived in Nanticoke and had a family.
The prison was immediately placed on lockdown, she said. Straesser said there is "no way" to know how long lockdown status will be in place.
Officials said the community was never in any danger.
Page 2 of 2 - An investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation is currently under way. Straesser said it is standard procedure for the FBI to investigate incidents which take place at federal prisons.
The name of the inmate who committed the assault has yet to be released.
