- "I wanted to help the animals," said six-year-old Sabrina Stevenson of the motivation behind her birthday donation drive.
Stevenson and her mother, Vicki, realized Sabrina had plenty of toys from the holiday season and wanted to do something to help others.
Vicki said she "shared alternate options for presents other than gifts." The one that stuck was requesting items for a local animal shelter.
She said after doing some research, they "printed out a list of items" the Dessin Animal Shelter needed.
When sending out invitations to her party, which happened in late January, the Stevenson's attached a note that said, "Instead of presents, Sabrina would like you to bring an item from the animal wish list for a local shelter."
Sabrina said they then "made a poster" with pictures they took of the animals during a visit to the shelter. The poster was on display during her party to show others the animals they would be helping.
Sabrina said a favorite place to visit at the shelter was "the cat room."
At the end of her party, Sabrina was able to donate $80 in PetSmart gift cards, $40 in cash and "baskets and baskets" of animal supplies. The baskets were separated into two-one for cats and one for dogs. The items donated ranged from treats to food, leashes and collars. Other items were cleaning supplies, detergent and batteries.
Sabrina brought the sorted items to the shelter on Feb. 8 and the animals were happy to receive them.
Vicki said, "It was all up to her and it was truly all about the animals."
Sabrina is already talking about receiving donations next year.
