Looks like it's that time of year again. This Thursday is Valentine's Day. It's a day for couples to celebrate their love for each other.
However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take the time to show your appreciation for your significant other every day. Valentine's Day is simply a holiday made for couples.
But did you know Valentine's Day was named for Saint Valentine? He was a priest in Rome and during his time Emperor Claudius II felt the single men made better soldiers than those who were married and had children.
It was then that the emperor outlawed marriage for young men. Saint Valentine defied the law by marrying young lovers in secret. He was caught and later put to death.
It is said that the first 'valentine' greeting was sent by Saint Valentine himself. While he was in prison before his death, he fell in love with a girl who is said to possibly have been the jailor's daughter.
Valentine's letter was signed "From your Valentine," which is still used today. In the United States, the first Valentine's Day greeting cards were made in the 1840s.
But you don't need to be in a relationship to enjoy the day. In college when Valentine's Day fell on a Saturday, my friends and I had a scary movie weekend instead. Even my non-single friends joined in. And we had a blast. The eight of us compiled our scary movies, got some snacks and we were all good to go.
Being single doesn't always mean being bitter and depressed on Valentine's Day. It was in company of friends that made for a great time.
Plus, why be bitter when: 1. candy and chocolate are really abundant for this holiday and days leading up to it and 2. you can get a ton of it on sale after Feb. 14.
So don't be sad on Valentine's Day. Go out and make some plans to have a good time, whether it's with friends or a significant other. You can even take the day to pamper yourself.
I know what I'm doing this year and it doesn't involve a romantic candlelight dinner. I have a date with my younger brother and we'll be attending a benefit for a great cause.
And I know it's going to be a great time.
