  • The second grade students at Stourbridge Primary Center worked hard Friday assembling packages of school supplies.
In each zip-lock bag, students excitedly placed items like paper, rulers, erasers and colored pencils. The items are removed from their packaging and arranged in the bag .
These back-to-school packs will be headed to students in Haiti.
Kelly Millon said that every year "the students at Stourbridge Primary Center do a service project" to coincide with Martin Luther King Day. Millon was talking with a friend, Holly Stanton, who mentioned this project. They both thought this "is a great service project" to allow children to help other children.
Once the school supplies are organized and the bags assembled, they will make the long journey to Haiti to be distributed on Feb. 14.
The project is done in cooperation with the Haiti Partnership. The Haiti Partnership has been sending volunteer mission teams to Haiti "to build schools, to provide humanitarian aid, and to do work alongside the Haitian people," according to a release.
The partnership invites citizens aged 17 and older to become a team member. This year, there are six teams with 65 Volunteers in Mission traveling to Haiti.
Ten of those attending will be from the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale with Honesdale High School students Paige Eldred and Haley Stanton.
The school supplies will then be given to students located near where these 10 individuals will be working.
Of the schools in Haiti, "85 percent" are privately owned. Prior to the 2010 earthquake, there was a population of 2 million children under age 16. At that time, there were 15,000 primary schools to instruct those children.
The Haiti Partnership tries to provide help to the students by providing the necessary school supplies to help these students succeed.
