“One Love: Valentine's Day Dinner Buffet” will take place on Feb. 14 at the Waymart Hotel in the heated pavilion from 5-9 p.m.
It is part of Western Wayne student Ariel Hoherchak's senior project and is in memory of her Godmother, Brenda Upright, who committed suicide on Feb. 13, 2011.
Tickets are $10 per person, which includes a drink, dinner and dessert. There will also be a cash bar and a raffle.
All money raised will go into a scholarship fund in Brenda's name. The scholarship will be for a senior at Western Wayne going into the mental health field.
To reserve tickets, call Virginia at (570) 488-9900 or Ariel at (570) 401-2471. They can also be purchased at the Hair Jam, Little Relaxations and the Wayne County Public Library. There will be limited tickets available at the door.
“I'm happy to honor my Godmother and I hope everyone will come and have a nice time,” said Ariel.
The other part of Hoherchak's senior project will be an Out of the Darkness community walk, organized through the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and a speaker from the AFSP who will talk to students about depression and suicide.
The walk will take place this fall. Proceeds from the walk will go to AFSP.
“I know now that it didn't just affect and hurt her, but that many people of all ages suffer for different reasons,” Ariel said. “Depression doesn't care if you are young or old, rich or poor. It kills and shatters many lives every year. Most importantly I have learned that there is help for those who suffer and for loved ones of someone taken by suicide. My goal is to share, hopefully help, and most importantly, educate people on the seriousness of depression and that suicide isn't the answer.”
