  • I blame TOM!

  • Last week I was frustrated when the scale at the Y showed a 4 oz weight gain. Between the time that I left the house and the time that I weighed in at the Y a few hours later I had gained a couple of pounds. (I even told the poor woman at the Y that her scale was wrong.)

It was a devastating blow to my ego and enthusiasm. It seemed impossible to me that I could've gained weight in a span of 4 hours, especially when I had been so "good".
    But I did.
For the male readers I warn you that you may want to stop reading at this point. When I was discussing the topic of this column with Kelly Waters and Melissa Leet I saw our Editor Greg Little blush…. Just a tad.
The reason I gained weight last Friday and have since taken it off (and then some) was because of my old frienemy (friend+enemy) TOM. TOM and I go way back to middle school. I couldn't wait to meet him when I first heard about him, but I quickly found out that TOM could wear out his welcome in a short "period" of time. He generally visits for about a week, sometimes longer, sometimes less, every month like clockwork. He has been known to show up unexpectedly and his timing is never good. There have been moments in my life when I have been really happy to see TOM, but usually not.
When TOM is around I get the munchies like Cheech & Chong. He exhausts me and gets on my nerves, which in turn causes me to get on everyone else's nerves. He taunts me with chocolate and quite often makes me feel as if someone kicked me in the stomach. At 43, I have had about enough of TOM and look forward to the day when we part company for good.
By the weekend, it dawned on me why I'd gained weight. I started researching TOM online and found that he really gets around. Women on diet blogs everywhere were complaining about him and the havoc that he was causing to their weight loss efforts. One woman suggested that a person should skip weigh in the week TOM visits because the effects a false weight gain can have on a woman's psyche can be devastating and often cause them to give up. There were tips about flushing your body with even more water and teas, avoiding any and all salt and continuing to exercise even though it was the last thing you felt like doing when TOM was around.
With the exception of skipping my weigh in, I did all of the above. The result? TOM left earlier than expected, I battled the munchies with fruit and popcorn and I exercised just about every night. I'm glad that I did too because the result was a 4.2lb weight loss!
