So with everyone’s New Year’s resolutions in full swing, no one wants to miss a day at the gym. With the flu epidemic in at its peak, do you risk getting other people sick or do you just stay home? Instead of going for a run, go for a brisk walk. Only do thirty minutes on the treadmill as opposed to one hour. Exercising may even help you feel better.
Be mindful of your Germs. No one wants to catch your cold so make sure that you always wipe down your machine after you use it, especially if you have a cold. Go to the gym during non-busy hours. This will help deter the spread of germs to other members. Finally, bring your own sweat towel. This will help the cleaning people at your exercise facility not catch your cold. They will not be touching your towel.
If your symptoms are below the neck like chest congestion, muscle soreness, fever and upset stomach STAY HOME!! Staying home and resting will not affect your performance when you return to working out. Your body will thank you for the rest. If you must exercise again, just remember to tone it down. If you exercise at the same intensity that you would if you were feeling well, you run the risk of getting sicker or even injuring yourself.
Bottom line is listen to your body. If you are too sick to get out of bed, then stay there and rest. Your body is trying to tell you that it needs recuperation. You won't be missing out, you can always go back to the gym. Better off taking it easy for a day or two instead of running yourself ragged and chancing being out of the gym for a week or more.
