  • — Local students are boarding a plane and heading to South Africa.
The Marywood University chapter of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) are traveling with Volunteer Solutions "for a period of two weeks" to volunteer in Cape Town and the surrounding villages this May, including Pi Chapter vice president Lauren Tenbus.
In a release submitted by Tenbus, it says every year, the Pi Chapter has numerous efforts to help promote the ongoing commitment "towards a sustainable culture and world."
The students plan to use their "skills and counseling expertise" to impact "the lives of individuals struggling with economic and personal hardships." This includes a large population who has fallen victim to HIV/AIDS and domestic violence.
In correspondence, Tenbus says she feels that "this is such a good cause," and that they are currently seeking donations. She and fellow officers Brittany Malcolm, Nina Pero and Jennifer Rojek wanted to take the "opportunity for the good of the cause and for our own counseling future." Students Lindsay Iacovazzi, Mara Silvestri and Laura Capel will also be going on the trip.

To help get the members of CSI's Pi Chapter to Cape Town with Volunteer Solutions, they are seeking the help of the community to help donate funds or services to the project.
    No donation is too small.
Formed in 1985, CSI strives to promote research, leadership, advocacy and excellence in counseling. Students in the society must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale and be in a counselor education program.
Today, there are over 84,000 members of the society with 6,000 initiated each year.
If you would like to make a monetary donation, all checks can be made out to Brittany Malcolm or Nina Pero. Please mail donation to: Attn: Chi Sigma Student Officers, Counseling and Psychology Department, Marywood University, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.
The group of students will be traveling with Volunteer Solutions, which is not affiliated with Marywood University or CSI.
