  • My journey into weight loss actually began on November 28, 2012 when I stepped on the scale and discovered I was 274 pounds. The mind was ready, it just had the daunting task of convincing my body it was time to eat right and exercise.
    I started out slowly and walked that morning. Not even a quarter of a mile. I was hoping for a stroke that never came. Over the next few weeks my walks increased and I hit the 3 mile mark. I had also lost 10 pounds and was no longer panting like a dog in heat. I mean "the heat!"
    As the holidays approached I found myself slipping from my morning walks. Surprisingly, on January 31, when I got back on the scale, I was still 264 pounds. However, that evening my wake up call came. A pain had started just below my sternum and gradually spread. It got increasingly worse over 45 minutes. I checked my blood pressure, (yes, I have BP Monitor from Omron) and it was sky high. Like an idiot, I drove myself to the emergency room in Callicoon, NY. I thought for sure I was having a heart attack. Thank God I was wrong. All the test showed my heart to be okay and that I actually have one. Irregardless of what the test said, I knew it was a message from above, or below depending on which of my friends you ask, that I need to take better care of myself.
    As I was registering for Weight No More, the staff at the YMCA were incredibly kind and helpful but they would not let me take my clothes off for the weigh in even though I wore a Speedo. (Let that image burn itself into the retinas of the Wayne Independent Staff!) I weighed in at 266.6 pounds fully clothed. My overall goal is to reach 210 pounds by end of August of 2013. I am asking our readers to hold me to it for no man is an island although I could pass for a small atoll.
    My journey now continues with the help of YMCA Staff Member Lucy Mazzenga. A certified trainer, Zumba fitness instructor and kind enough soul not to laugh at me in shorts. We discussed my goals and she started me on my first day at the YMCA. I am off and running, okay walking. Read along over the next 13 weeks as Michelle Hessling and I talk about our successes and possible failures in the 2013 Weight No More Challenge.
    Now all I have to do is go to the emergency room and be surgically removed from this Speedo!
