I've wanted to participate in this contest since it began in 2008. I attempted to the 1st year. I managed to get to the Y for a total of two weigh-ins!
2nd year I had health issues that physically prevented me. Years 3-5, I was simply too busy having been promoted at work and learning my new position.
Why this year then? What's different?
Well, I am definitely busier than ever having been promoted again to Group Publisher in 2012, overseeing our properties in NEPA and now southwestern NY. My personal life hasn't slowed down. Our family has grown to include two Daughters In Law and a new puppy. Jim and I are engaged and have a wedding to plan. I am still caregiver to my 87-year-old Mom. We are still remodeling our house and landscaping.
It would've been easy to convince myself that I was too busy to participate in 2013. But I am doing it! I'm committed to sharing all of the tales of this adventure with you each week. I've gone public. There's no turning back!
I have been overweight since birth. Literally! I was nearly 10 lbs. when I was born. I was a chubby kid, an even chubbier teen and at 43 have progressed to "beyond chubby."
It isn't that I haven't tried! I've joined Weight Watchers or TOPS many times. I've read the self-help books. I've tried holistic remedies. I've joined gyms and attempted aerobic kickboxing. I've considered surgery. I've bought all of the diet supplements and popular milkshake diet plans out there. Back in the early 90s I even went so far as to travel two hours per week to a medical center that specialized in weight loss. They dispensed teeny tiny little pills and when you took them you lost your appetite and had energy enough to clean your house at 3AM. Unfortunately, when you went off them you gained two pounds back for every one that you lost.
What I've found (and I seriously hate to admit this) is there isn't a magic pill. There isn't a quick or easy way to lose weight and keep it off. It all comes down to two things: diet and exercise. That's my strategy! Wish me luck!
