  • -Members of Laurel Chapter #67, Order of the Eastern Star, were busy during the Christmas season helping out the community.
One of their projects included adopting two local families. The chapter was provided with a wish list for the families and each of the members brought in gifts for the families.
"We get the families from the R.D. Wilson school nurse, Maria Shelp," said Carol Hunt, past matron. "She knows the families that can use some help."
Karen Matoushek, conductress, works with Shelp and gets the ages, sizes, etc. There was an "overwhelming" amount of gifts that the members brought in for the families.
Another Christmas project the chapter does is giving gifts to veterans at the Gino Merli Veterans Center in Scranton.
The chapter gets a want/need list and the members bring in gifts to take to the center.
Gifts for the families and the veterans are brought to the chapter's meeting/Christmas party in December. After, the gifts are gathered up and taken to the proper location.
"We have been doing this for many years," said Hunt. "They are always most grateful for the help at holiday time."
