— Quick response kept a fire from turing very bad early Tuesday morning.
At around 12:33 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the Palmer & Sons truck repair business on Route 652. It is a large truck repair facility.
White Mills Fire Chief Mike Hill said a tractor-trailer had caught on fire in one of the bays sometime after the business had closed.
Hill said some firefighters went straight to the scene and extinguished the blaze very quickly, which likely saved the business. Hill said there were two 500-gallon fuel tanks in close proximity to the fire which could have spelled disaster had it not been put out so quickly.
He estimated the fire was put out within 15 minutes.
"They got it out real quick," said Hill.
In fact, he said they had the fire out before he arrived with the tanker.
He did say there was some damage to the building as well as to light fixtures and other vehicles in the building. There was also smoke damage.
The cab portion of the tractor was complete destroyed, he said.
A cause of the fire has not been determined. Hill said fire department personnel were on the scene Tuesday and a state fire marshal was also expected to examine the scene.
There were several departments which responded to the scene, including companies from Hawley, Lakeville, Honesdale, Welcome Lake as well as tankers from Prompton, Waymart and Forest in Pike County. The tankers, however, were sent back after being dispatched.
Hill said firefighters cleared the scene by around 1:30 a.m.
