  • HONESDALE - Being a midwife is no easy task. This difficult task was celebrated this past week with National Midwifery Week.
Wayne Memorial Hospital held a Midwifery Mingle Thursday in honor of the profession. It also was an opportunity for women, expecting or not, to gather information about various topics.
"It really is a celebration of midwives, moms and babies," said Sheela Porter-Smith, a certified Nurse/Midwife at Wayne Memorial Hospital. "It also raises awareness for midwives" and all that they are able to accomplish.
This is the fourth annual event and is popular with mothers-to-be and children alike. Moms were able to take part in free massages while their little ones took advantage of the face painting station.
Another main focus of the mingle was to get out information about all aspects of pregnancy and aftercare.
Patricia Konzman, another Certified Nurse/Midwife at the hospital, has been with Wayne Memorial for 20 years.
"I started as a registered nurse in 1983," she said, and then became a midwife.
"I have seen the changes in labor and delivery," throughout her career, Konzman said.
For example, hospitals have moved away from labor and delivery in separate rooms. Now, women can stay in one room instead of being moved for delivery.
There are also more options available beside a traditional birth, such as a water birth.
She said an important thing for women to know is midwives are not just for home births. "We deliver right here in the hospital," she said, adding that they can "keep things natural" even in a hospital setting.
The mingle also helps women share their experiences about what worked well, and maybe not so well, for them.
"It's about sharing experiences," from women in all stages of pregnancy and motherhood, Konzman said.
