  • HONESDALE — Despite a soggy, rain-soaked field and a ridiculous number of penalties, Honesdale still managed to hold off a scrappy Carbondale Area squad Friday night here in the Maple City.
The Hornets needed a goal-line stand late in the second half, then two dazzling plays by quarterback Kevin Miller to deliver a wild 16-15 victory over the visiting Chargers.
"This is a huge win for us," Miller told TWI Sports just moments after the final gun sounded. "Carbondale is a good team and they played hard, but we never gave up. It just feels really good to win one like this."
Coach Jim Ludwig echoed those sentiments.
"What a great win!" he exclaimed with rain falling and mud-covered Hornets celebrating all around him. "Let's hope this is some kind of turning point for the kids. Our defense came up huge when we needed them the most and that was the difference."
Honesdale's defense did indeed save the day.
The Hornets committed one foolish mistake after another, piling up more than 100 yards in penalties. However, the Red & Black stuffed the Chargers in the shadow of their own goal post on four straight plays to secure a razor-thin win.
Miller played the hero on offense, scrambling for a touchdown with 5:19 left in regulation. After a timeout, the junior quarterback struck again, diving in for the 2-point conversion that ultimately proved to be the gamewinner.
"I made some dumb mistakes earlier in the game, so I was really happy that I got a chance to make up for them," a smiling Miller said. "I just didn't want to let my teammates down."
Nick Maritato and Jonathan Gillow spearheaded the defense up front, while Ron Krempasky and Timmy Russell delivered with one clutch play after another in the secondary.
