  • Rep. Tom Marino hosted a health fair for senior citizens at the Hamlin Assembly of God, Monday.
Local agencies from both Wayne and Pike counties participated in the event. They ranged from healthcare, education, financial security, and more.
"The fair is free for seniors," says Cathy Romaniello, District Representative for Marino. "The fair allows for seniors to get information about all the services they are entitled to in their county."
"Along with getting information from these organizations, seniors could get diabetes testing done, bone density and flu shots among others," Romaniello says.
A Mobile Vet Center was also there. It features a 38' mobile counseling center, two private offices in the vehicle, satellite communication with WiFi, Internet service with VAMC; satellite. phones, fax/copiers, and laptops; video conference and tele-health, three flat screen TVs for training and educational videos, wheelchair lift and accessibility, and a full time veteran driver and veteran counselor.
"We are one of 70 mobile vet centers in the country and one of two in Pennsylvania," says Joseph May, MVC Counselor. "We help veterans get into the VA system and bring them as much local information as we can. We can offer therapy, help them with healthcare, and try to answer any questions they may have. Sometimes they just want someone to talk to. We like to do events like this and get information out. We help point them in the right direction."
"Not many seniors know about all the services they can take advantage of," says Rep. Tom Marino. "We are obligated to tell them what they are entitled too. We wouldn't be where we are without our seniors or our military."
Rep. Marino says he is pushing to get services for veterans available at closer locations.
"Veterans shouldn't have to travel very far to get the services they deserve, especially when it's difficult for many of them to get around," he says. "We have to make sure we have all the resources available for seniors and veterans. We owe veterans at the very least to make sure their mental and physical health is good."
Rep. Marino had several of his representatives with him, who were also available to talk to seniors at the fair.
"I want them to feel comfortable when they come to our offices, so I want the public to know who we are," Marino says. "I don't want the constituents to feel scared to share their questions and concerns."
