A new reporter has joined the staff of The Wayne Independent.
Kelly Waters of Waymart began work on Monday of this week. She is a general assignment reporter for the newspaper.
Waters has been a reporter at The News Eagle in Hawley for little more than a year.
"I am very excited to have Kelly join our staff," said Greg Little, editor of the newspaper. "I think she will bring a fresh perspective to this newspaper and I look forward to her contributions to the paper and the community."
Waters is a graduate of Western Wayne High School and East Strausburg University with a major in English and a minor in psychology.
"I love writing," said Waters.
Waters said part of her requirements in college were submitting pieces for the college paper or serving as an editor.
"Once I joined the college paper I have liked it ever since," said Waters.
One of the aspect Waters enjoys is "getting to meet a lot of new people."
She has also been able to meet many high-ranking government officials, something she said probably would not have happened if she wasn't a reporter.
"I have had a lot of different experience I might not otherwise have had," said Waters.
Waters said she is pleased to have the opportunity to come to a daily newspaper as opposed to the twice-weekly paper in Hawley.
"I feel like there is more of an opportunity to be involved," said Waters. "Every day there is going to be something different."
As for writing, Waters said she likes a wide variety of stories and topics.
"I would love to do more feature writing," said Waters.
She also likes covering the courts and that will be part of her regular beat at The Wayne Independent.
"I like a variety of topics," said Waters.
"I can't tell you how happy we are to be back at full strength on our news staff," said Little. "Kelly will fill a much-needed void and I hope everyone in our coverage area will welcome her to The Wayne Independent."
