  •  - The children at the Ages and Stages Day Care center got to pedal for cause a cause Friday.

For the past six years, Ages and Stages has participated in the week long Trike-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Because no child is ever turned away because of inability to pay, public fundraisers are important for St. Jude.

Since its inception in 1983, the Trike-A-Thon program has raised more than $87 million.

For this week, children participate in a program centered around learning bike safety.

Children get to learn with personalities Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny. The program also teaches toy riding safety tips as well as bicycle and tricycle safety.

Participating day care centers are provides with free bike safety resources from St. Jude.

The program gives children the benefit of learning how to safely ride their bikes while helping St. Jude in its mission to provide care for children battling cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

Children learn a different safety tip each day for a week. At the end of the week, they get a chance to put their new knowledge to use to pedal their way across the finish line.

"We accept donations for St. Jude all week," said Trike-A-Thon organizer Patty Barkawi. "It's a really great cause and the kids have a lot of fun."

    About St. Jude

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The hospital’s research has helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancer from less than 20 percent when the institution opened to almost 80 percent today. It is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children, and no family ever pays St. Jude for care.
