  • The Wayne County District Attorney's Office organized and sponsored the first-ever "Stand Tall for Basketball" summer camp. Former HHS hoops star and current DA Janine Edwards hosted the event this week at Lakeside Elementary.

  • Long before she became a lawyer and eventually District Attorney of Wayne County, Janine Edwards’ life revolved around basketball.
    A star player for Coach Tim Wood at Honesdale High?School, Janine’s teams won Lackawanna League and District Two titles, eventually advancing to the PIAA state tournament.
    “As a parent and as District Attorney, it’s very important to me that our children turn off the TV, get out and do something active,”?she told TWI?Sports. “I?think that basketball helps kids develop all kinds of good habits like sportsmanship. It’s also a great way to exercise, have fun and make new friends.”
    This week, Edwards and the District Attorney’s Office hosted the inaugural “Stand Tall for Basketball”?summer camp. It was open to boys and girls of all ages and abilities, grades 3-6.
    “Stand Tall for Basketball” attracted 50 players to the Lakeside Elementary School gym...a fact that did Coach Wood’s heart good.
    “Judging from what we saw here this week, I think the future of basketball in Wayne County looks pretty bright,”?he said.
    An all-star cast of players and coaches  volunteered their time to make the camp a rousing success.
    Among those on hand to “coach up”?these young players were: Tracy Ludwig, Mike Lyle, Colleen Edwards, Maria West, Ron Rowe, Mike Miller, Taylor Parenti, Sabrina Wood and Mary Martin.
    Two awards were presented to players in their respective age groups...one for foul shooting and one for “Most Improved Player.
    Katie Ludwig (Grades 3-4, foul shooting.
    Hannah McConnell (3-4, Most Improved).
    Connor Coar (3-4, foul shooting).
    Mason Briggs (3-4, Most Improved).
    Grace Parenti (Grades 5-6, foul shooting).
    Maggie Murphy (5-6, Most Improved).
    Colin Rickard (5-6, foul shooting).
    Caleb Martin (5-6, Most Improved).
