AVI exploded for nine runs in the final two frames to defeat Invisible Hunter, 10-8. This Game One Wayne County Men's Softball League quarterfinal took place at St. Vincent's Field in Honesdale.
For the first five innings Tuesday evening at St. Vincent’s Field, it looked as though Invisible Hunter would run away and hide.
The home team erupted for five runs in the 4th and carried a 7-1 lead into the top of the 6th. It was then that Ariel View Inn bats finally began to awaken. The visitors tallied nine runs in the last two frames to post an electrifying 10-8 comeback victory.
With the win, AVI?takes a 1-0 lead in this best-of-three Wayne County Men’s Softball League quarterfinal playoff series. Weather permitting, Game Two was scheduled for Thursday night at the Paupack Township Field.
Ron Hendershot went to the hill as Invisible Hunter’s starting pitcher and rolled along until the 6th. The veteran righty allowed just one run in the top of the first before running out of gas.
Ron was relieved by Frank Bannon, who would eventually be saddled with a hard-luck loss.
Neil Hochreiter started for AVI, but was ejected for arguing a fair-foul call. He received relief help from Anthony Nicholas, who ended up with the win.
Jake Gastinger led the offensive assault. AVI’s third baseman ripped three hits in four plate appearances. He a pair of runs and collected three RBIs.
Greg Marks also banged out three hits, including two in his team’s final two rallies.
Shaun Hall and Nicholas also tallied twice apiece.
Pat Diskin slapped a pair of singles and Tom Toma-sello reached safely three straight times.
Erik Sandercock led the way for Invisible Hunter, ripping three hits and scoring three runs.
Joel Watson turned in the defensive Play of the Day in the top of the 7th. Invisible Hunter’s second baseman made a spectacular diving catch in short left center. Joel then scrambled to his feet cut and down an AVI?runner trying to take third on a tag-up.
