  • A big, enthusiastic crowd turned out Friday night to witness the re-birth of a long dormant Wayne County tradition.
Nearly 500 fans gathered at the “HomerDome” in Waymart in support of the 2012 Men’s Softball All Star Game. This contest pitted East against West and featured players from both the local modified circuit and the Wednesday night Blue Collar League.
By the time the final out was recorded, the East had hammered out a 15-10 win over the West and given fans something to look forward to in coming years.
“I?think it was a huge success,”?said Kyle Barna, organizer of the Waymart Benefit Softball Tournament. “It was pretty amazing. I?can’t believe that this many people showed up. We definitely want to make this an annual event.”
    Big Guns
Joel Watson entertained the overflow crowd Friday night with one towering blast after another.
The former HHS and King’s College baseball star was named Most Valuable Player of the All Star Game after crushing two homers. Watson unloaded a solo shot in the visitors’ third, then added a 3-run bomb in the top of the fifth.
Joel’s homerun heroics gave a trio of East All Star pitchers plenty of support. Bob “Reggie” Bunnell, Jim Watson and Pete Saprona each took turns on the hill for the victors.
Kyle Schuman and Buddy Vail also flexed their muscles with one Big Fly apiece. JW?Swanick and Jim Watson contributed two hits each to the cause.
Kenny Morris provided plenty of offensive fireworks for the West All Stars. The Western Wayne diamond standout homered in each of his first two at-bats.
Justin Collins chipped in with two base knocks and two runs scored.
Richie Walker and Paul McDonald each toed the rubber for the West.
“The players really fed off the energy of the crowd,”?Barna said. “I’m absolutely ecstatic about the way the game was received.”
