Honesdale got off to a slow start in the 2012 Collegiate Summer Baseball League campaign, but the local lads have been on a tear lately.
On a blistering hot Sunday in Varden, the Ramblers lifted their regular season record above .500 for the first time via a solid win over Wagner’s.
Coach John Granquist’s squad battled its way to an 11-7 victory, improving to 6-5 for the summer.
“Any win is a good win, so we’ll definitely take it,” he told TWI Sports. “It’s good to get back over .500, that’s for sure.”
The Ramblers return to action Wednesday evening for a single game at Hughes Constuction of East Scranton (5:30 p.m.)
Rob Haines took the hill as Honesdale’s starter Sunday afternoon.
A fireballing righty who starred at Western Wayne, Haines experienced control issues early on, but battled his way to a hard-earned decision.
Granquist came on in relief worked the final three innings to earn a save.
Nick Mazza paced the Ramblers’ offensive attack. The Ramblers’ shortstop reached base safely three times with a double and two walks. Mazza also scored three runs.
Lead-off man Ryan Soden worked his way aboard three times and tallied a pair of runs as well.
Granquist aided his own cause by banging out three hits in four plate appearances. John laced an RBI?single in the home first and bottom of the third. He drove in yet another run with a clutch single in the fifth.
Justin Magistro also contributed to the Ramblers’ cause. Honesdale’s veteran third baseman walked and scored in the first, then forced in another run with a based loaded walk.
Wagner’s pushed across five runs in the first two frames largely as a result of walks and hit batsmen.
