One of the region’s most popular summer traditions begins today at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. At exactly 8:30 a.m. this morning, hundreds of runners will embark on the first leg of the Wayne County Triple Crown.
The Dr. William Perkins Memorial 5K has served as the official opener of this series for more than a quarter century now...and the 27th renewal is once again set to attract the area’s elite distance specialists.
More than 300 runners competed last year and an even bigger group is expected today.
“We’re very excited,”?race director Tammy?Jensen told TWI Sports. “We’re going to debut a brand new course that (Hall of Fame coach) Joe Macey designed for us, so we are really looking forward to seeing what all the runners think of it.”
As in the past, the Perkins Race is being sponsored by Wayne Memorial Health Systems, Honesdale Friends of Track & Cross Country, and the Wayne County Commissioners. All proceeds from the 5K go to the HHS cross country and track programs.
Dallas superstar Regan Rome defended her crown last summer, stopping the clock at 18:31. Mike Ryan, a Lake Lehman graduate, copped his first-ever men’s title with  a blistering time of 16:33.
The second leg of the 2012 Wayne County Triple Crown Series will be held on   Saturday, August 25th.
The 17th Annual Habitat for Humanity 5K will go off at 9:00 a.m. from the track at Honesdale High School Athletic Complex track. This particular event features a beautiful 3.1-mile course that winds through the countryside and returns to the track.
Race reservations can be made at the Wayne County Habitat for Humanity website at hfhwcpa.org.
The summer’s final race ...and the third leg of the Triple Crown Series...will be held on Saturday, September 15th. This race is sponsored each year by the Wayne County YMCA.
