In a battle of crosstown rivals, Firmstone/Lakewood Oil closed out its Babe Ruth regular season slate with an impressive win over Beck/Gogolski/Poska &?Company.
Both teams hail from the Waymart area.
With the win, Firmstone sealed the deal on a division title with a dazzling 15-2 overall record.
“I’ve been working with this team for two years now and it’s been a pleasure,” Coach Joe Gombita told TWI Sports. “The bottom line is that this is a great group of kids. They’re very coachable and a lot of fun to be around.”
Next up for the Waymart lads is a berth in the 2012 playoffs. Firmstone will open up its gold medal quest Thursday at the RD?Wilson Complex.
BGP now proceeds to a play-in game against the Forest City Tigers. That contest is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start Monday night in Waymart.
Brandon Garnet was the star of Monday night’s ballgame. A fireballing righty, Garnet worked six nearly flawless innings en route to a no-hitter.
Garnet piled up an eye-popping 15 strikeouts and walked just two batters.
“Brandon eats and sleeps baseball..and he was pretty pumped up for the local rivalry,”?said Coach Gombita. “He throws the ball really hard for his age and he hardly ever walks anyone.”
Garnet received all the offensive support he’d need in the bottom of the 4th.
Nate Bateman walked, stole second, moved up on a passed ball and scored on an infield out.
Firmstone/Lakewood Oil tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the 5th.
Nicholas Gombita worked a walk, swiped second and came around to score courtesy of an RBI?single off the bat of Evan Coons. Coons then stole a base and scampered home on a wild pitch.
Defensively, Zach Rovinsky turned in two sparkling plays that helped preserve the no-hitter. Waymart’s Gold Glove third baseman handled a hot grounder early in the game, then chased down a pop fly late in the contest.
The only other out not recorded by Garnet on the mound was handled by his batterymate.
Firmstone/Lakewood Oil catcher Johnny Bateman cut down a BCP runner at-tempting to steal third in the top of the 4th.
“I love the way our kids are playing this season, but watch out for BGK,”?said Coach Gombita. “They’re young, but they’re really well coached and they might be the team to beat next year.”
