The second installment in what officials hope will become a long-running tradition is now a “go”?for 2012.
According to organizer Kyle Barna, the 2nd Annual Waymart Benefit Softball Tournament (a/k/a:?Homer Dome Classic) is set for the weekend of July 13-15.
The festivities will commence Friday night with a revival of the Wayne County Men’s Softball League All-Star Game. This contest is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. on the Homer Dome diamond and will feature teams from the East and West.
Ballots for player selection are in the process of going out and rosters will be available by early July.
On Tap in Waymart
Starting Saturday morning and continuing through to Sunday night, a multi-bracketed tournament will be held, using both the RD Wilson and Homer Dome ballfields.
There will be two distinct divisions:?the Championship (men only) and the Blue Collar (open to men’s, co-ed and women’s teams).
Last year, Trio’s captured the inaugural tournament title, posting four straight lopsided wins en route to a spot in the final.
Trio’s was finally challenged in the championship game, but rallied for a 13-12 win over Wargo Flooring by scoring seven runs in the final two innings.
A Bit of Background
The Waymart Benefit Softball Tournament had its beginnings during the summer of 2011.
The organizers’ original goal was to raise enough money to purchase permanent lighting for the RD?Wilson Field. As a result of last year’s tourney, nearly $2,000 was generated to help make that dream a reality.
Officials are hopeful that the 24-team maximum will be attained for this year’s double elimination event.
The public is invited to attend to witness exciting softball action and support a worthy cause.
