An incident of criminal mischief could have turned deadly.

On Jan. 2, state police were notified that nails had been placed in the road near the intersection of Atkison Avenue and Cypress Street in Hawley, an area which has seen increased traffic flow since the closing of Wellwood Avenue due to the Hawley Silk Mill project.

Police say drivers not only had to pay repair costs, but also could suffered serious injury if a blowout occurred. If a punctured tire fails at a high rate of speed, the driver could lose control of the vehicle, causing accident or death.

Police plan to charge those involved with the placement of the nails to the fullest extent of the law.

Anyone with information is asked to call Honesdale State Police at (570) 253-7126.
