Michelle R. Hessling, the publisher of The Wayne Independent, is now the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce’s newest board of director.

Hessling, who is also the publisher of The News Eagle of Hawley, The Villager of Moscow and The Carbondale News, joined the 19-member board after a unanimous vote by chamber members at their annual meeting Thursday at the Settlers Inn.

“She’s a Wayne County native, a Honesdale High School graduate and has worked for The Wayne Independent for the past 19 years,” said G. Richard Garman, who handled the election and introduction of the new board members.

Hessling became publisher of the four newspapers in October 2009 after serving as advertising director for The Wayne Independent.

She has served on several area organizations, including a most recent stint on the Greater Honesdale Partnership.

“Her credentials are certainly impressive,” Garman said.

Hessling said she was very “pleased and humbled” to be elected to the board of the chamber and “is excited to serve the business community of Wayne County.”

Re-elected to the board as officers were: President Laurie Beahan, First Vice President Todd Stephens, Second Vice President Dan Card, Secretary Kuni Holbert, Treasurer Helen Piorkowski and Past President Lew Critelli.

The keynote speaker was state Rep. Michael Peifer of the 139th District.
