Two Lake Ariel men avoided tragedy when the car they were driving across Lake Wallenpaupack broke through the ice. But now, the driver faces two charges from the incident.

Douglas Dipalma, 24, was charged Monday with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief from the early morning incident on Jan. 11.

Dipalma and his passenger Steven Devita, 28, told state police they were “joy riding” on Lake Wallenpaupack in a 1998 Honda Civic when the car broke through the ice, according to the incident report.

The two men escaped through the sun roof near Green Circle Drive in Palmyra Twp., Wayne County, and were able to walk to the shoreline.

One of the males climbed up the embankment while the other could not because he was wet and cold, and the embankment was snow-covered and slick.

The charges were filed before Magistrate Jay R. Rose.
