Valley View dealt Paupack and ace pitcher Nicki Mann a disappointing first loss of the season this weekend in Archbald. The Cougars leapt out to an early lead, then held off a Lady Buck rally en route to a 5-1 victory.

Paupack’s dreams of a perfect junior high softball season were dashed on the rocks outside Archbald.

The young Lady Bucks carried an undefeated record with them into the this year’s play-off semifinal against Valley View.

Sadly for local diamond fans, Paupack’s 18-game winning streak came to an end thanks to a disappointing 5-1 loss.

“Our two teams are very evenly-matched,” Paupack Coach Chris Doty told TWI Sports. “I think if we played 10 games, we’d each win five. Valley View just outplayed us on this particular day. They deserved to win.”

The Lady Bucks closed out the 2010 Lackawanna League campaign with an 18-1 overall record.

This marks the 4th consecutive season Paupack has won at least a divisional championship in junior high softball.

Bitter Pill
Valley View leapt out to a quick lead at the expense of Paupack’s ace, Nicki Mann.
Mann utterly dominated the league this spring, compiling a stellar 11-1 record and a tiny ERA.

However, the Cougars scored two quick runs on their way to an eventual 5-1 decision.

Nicki went the distance in this one. She allowed just four hits, but walked five and fanned five in seven innings.

Victoria Ciszak delivered Paupack’s lone run with a booming RBI triple in the fourth. Mann, who’d led off the inning with a single, came around to score.

Kennedy Thomas, Emily Winkler and Ciszak each turned in a solid defensive effort.

“I’m definitely not happy with how it all ended, but I’m still very proud of the girls,” said Coach Doty. “They had a wonderful season and our younger kids are already looking forward to next year.”
