License renewals/sales will be offered “off site” on Saturday, March 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waymart Borough Building on South St. in Waymart, PA.

  • A professional with the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement for Region 3- servicing Pike & Wayne Counties for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will be volunteering time to assist community members comply with PA State Dog Laws. License renewals/sales will be offered “off site” on Saturday, March 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waymart Borough Building on South St. in Waymart, PA.
    Generally dog licenses are obtained through mail order or in-person at county offices during business hours or Dessin Animal Shelter.  This Saturday event will allow for purchase of a single or multiple licenses through a location other than these traditional sources.  This will be a ‘first-come, first-served’ opportunity and any inquiries should be directed to Dessin Animal Shelter (570) 253-4037.  Dogs are not required to attend for purchase of the State License.  Any animal present must be leashed or crated at all times or the owner will risk a fine.
     Dessin Animal Shelter is greatly appreciative of the volunteerism extended to assist our communities become compliant with PA State Dog Law.  Please contact the Shelter for additional information about this Offsite Dog License Compliance Event, (570) 253-4037.
    Pennsylvania's Dog Laws
     * All dogs three months of age or older must be licensed.  Please visit the PA State website for an advance application or additional details; http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/agriculture/lib/agriculture/doglawfiles/dog_law_license_application.pdf.
    * All Dog Licenses are issued by the County Treasurer or specified agents located through out the County.  Call for locations; in Pike County (570) 296-3441, in Wayne County (570) 253-5970, ext. 1410 or go to http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/agriculture/cwp/view.asp?a=3&q=126612.
     * All dogs must be under control and must not be allowed to run at large.
     * Dogs are personal property, and owners are responsible for damages caused by their dog(s).
     * It is illegal to mistreat or abuse any animal.  It is illegal to abandon or attempt to abandon any dog.  Violations should be reported to a local humane organization or the police.  The local Humane Police Officer, in the employ of Dessin Animal Shelter, is Marlene Metzger.  Reports of animal abuse or abandonment can be filed by calling or emailing; (570) 647-0239, (570) 493-3377, dptydawg@ptd.net.
     * No dog under eight weeks of age may be sold, traded, bartered or transferred.
     * Poison or harmful substances shall not be in any place where dogs may easily eat it, whether on personal, public or any property elsewhere.
     * Any facility that keeps, harbors, boards, shelters, sells, gives away or transfers a total of 26 or more dogs in any one calendar year must have and maintain a current Kennel License.
     * All dogs and cats 3 months of age or older are required to have a current rabies vaccination.

     * Currently Pennsylvania does not have any laws pertaining to barking.  Please contact local POA for community specific regulations.
