PennDOT issued the following travel alerts Friday morning due to the snow storm:

• INTERSTATE 84 EASTBOUND NEW YORK STATE –BOTH LANES CLOSED  BETWEEN EXITS 6 AND 18 FOR WEATHER. USE ALTERNATE ROUTE. This includes the entire eastbound stretch in Pike County (Exits 6 through Exit 11) and extends into New York State.

•  The PA Turnpike is presently shut down in both directions between the Carlisle Exit (#226) and the Breezewood Exit (#161).
Severe white-out conditions have caused a multiple-vehicle accident in the westbound lanes of the Pa. Turnpike in the area of milepost 206, Cumberland County, which is about five miles east of the Blue Mountain Interchange (#201). As a result of the incident, the Turnpike is presently shut down in both directions between the Carlisle Exit (#226) and the Breezewood Exit (#161). Due to the nature of the incident, the eastbound Turnpike had to be closed to allow emergency-response access to the scene.

All traffic is being taken off the highway at exits 201 and 226. These are the detours:

WESTBOUND TRAFFIC: From Carlisle Interchange #226, Take Route 11 north to Interstate 81 south (58 miles) to I-81 Maryland Exit #4, to Interstate 70 west (48 miles) to route 30 east (.3 miles). Re-enter Breezewood Interchange #161.

EASTBOUND TRAFFIC: Exit Breezewood to Route 30 West (.3 miles) to Route 70 East (I-81 exit MD #26, 48 miles) to Interstate 81 North (58 miles) to Exit #52B, Middlesex, Route 11 South to the Pa. Turnpike Carlisle Interchange 226/Old 16.

As of 8 a.m. today, the speed limit on the entire Pennsylvania Turnpike system has been reduced to 45 mph due to the winter storm. Motorists should not travel unless necessary.

In addition, the Pa. Turnpike has implemented a ban of tractor-trailers hauling twin or double trailers and has also banned empty trailers due to high winds and visibility restrictions. The ban also pertains to any other type or class of vehicle, including a passenger vehicle, that is towing a trailer. A more restrictive ban of all tractor trailers and box trucks remains in place on the Northeastern Extension.

Use extreme caution when traveling in blizzard conditions. If you must be on the highway, visit www.paturnpike.com (select the "Traveler Info" menu on the left) or call or the Turnpike travel advisory hotline, 1-866-976-8747, to check closures and conditions before you leave.
