The Blazers closed out a sensational youth hoops season this weekend at Lakeside Elementary.
Under the direction of coaches Jamie Rutherford & George Firmstone, the Blazers held off a fired-up Mavericks squad to claim the Honesdale Biddy Basketball Association’s Senior Division championship.
On Saturday evening, the Blazers punched their ticked to the title tilt by dealing the Cards a 37-31 loss in the semifinals.
Just 24 hours later, the Blazers clinched the title via a 29-25 victory over the Mavs.
With these two play-off wins, the Blazers finished up their 2009-’10 campaign with a sterling 8-1 record.
On the Court
Adam Kelly nearly destroyed the Blazers’ title hopes with an unforgettable individual performance in the semis.
The hot-shooting guard exploded for a season-high 27 points. Unfortunately for Cardinal fans, the rest of the team managed just four points in a 37-31 loss.
Jack Rickard & Josh LoBasso were a formidable 1-2 punch in the win. Jack tallied a team-best 14 points, while Josh chipped in with 10.
The Blazers built an early lead in Sunday’s game, then held off a furious Mavs’ rally en route to the Senior Division crown.
Brian Gibbons tallied all four of his points in the second period, leading the Blazers to a 15-10 halftime advantage.
LoBasso took over after intermission. Josh ended up with team-best 10 points on the strength of three field goals and a 4-for-10 stint at the stripe.
Kevin Van Sickle also played a key role in the win with six points.
The Mavs were paced by Jonathan Sepe’s 10 points, most of which came from his patented baseline jumper.
Tristan Petroski added six points, including a trey, while Trent McConnell chipped in with four.
