The following Memorial Weekend observances in Wayne County were reported to The Wayne Independent:
Damascus
• Bob Dexter, Damascus, called to invite all veterans to attend the dedication of the Vet’s Memorial located at the Damascus Historical Society’s building on Rt. 371 next to Damascus School.  The ceremony will be on May 25th at 11 a.m. General Daniel J. O’Neill (ret.) will be the speaker.  For more information call Mr. Dexter at (570)729-8676.
Equinunk
• This year’s Memorial Day Observance at the Equinunk Historical Society/Calder House Shop, will be on Saturday, May 23 starting at 1 p.m. The presentation will honor local veteran, Wilson Lord.  Following this short program, participants will walk to the Equinunk Cemetery to place flags on the graves of the veterans, and then return to the Museum for an old-fashioned ice cream social. The museum will open at 12 noon.
Hawley
• The Memorial Parade in Hawley starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at Bingham Park, Hawley. Lineup is at 1 p.m. followed by a veteran service hosted by Hawley American Legion Post 311, before the parade starts. The parade heads up Main Avenue, turn at Teeter’s Furniture onto Church Street, and going onto Hudson Street and back to the park. There will be a brief ceremony at the Eddy Bridge as well (at the end of Church Street).
Honesdale
• 1. The 10 a.m. Monday, May 25 parade begins at Triangle Park on North Main, and heads down Main Street, ending at  Central Park where the veteran’s ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. The keynote speaker is Staff Sergeant Harry Young, member of Company A, Pa. National Guard 2nd Battalion (mech.) 109th infantry, and  a veteran of Afghanistan and Bosnia.
2. VFW, Post 531, Honesdale, is holding a Memorial Day Service at the Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Monday, 3:30 p.m. All are welcome.
Northern Wayne
• American Legion Post #209 of Lakewood will visit the cemeteries in the area and return to the Veterans Park in Lakewood for a service at 12 noon, Monday, May 25. Refreshments will be provided at Lakewood. Legion members will visit cemeteries at the following locations that morning: 9 a.m. Balls Eddy; 9:30 a.m. Shehawken; 10 a.m. Orson; 10:15 a.m. Little York; 11 a.m. Lake Como.
Pleasant Mount
• The community is invited to join The Costello-Monahan-Brown American Legion post # 964 for a reading of the rolls from the Revolutionary War to present day at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25 in Meredith Park in Pleasant Mount. If it rains, the reading will be held in the Community Center Gym. There will be a garden tractor pull starting at 11 a.m. behind the Community Center and the Historical Society O’Hara House will be open to the public until noon.
South Canaan
South Canaan Bible Protestant Cemetery Association is hosting a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m., Monday, May 25 at the cemetery on Route 296, South Canaan. The ceremony will be held by the Thomas A. Snook Post 6520, Cortez Chapter of the VFW at the grave side of Harold B. Shea, a sergeant in the Pa. Battery D, 310 Field Artillery, who served during W.W.I.
Sterling
• Memorial Day Observance will be held on Monday, May 25th at 1 p.m.. at Sterling in front of Veterans' Plaque. The location is next to Sterling United Methodist Church along Rt. 196. The guest speaker will be Commissioner Wendell Kay; other special features will be Newfoundland Color Guard, soloists Patti Frey and Gloria Kay. Refreshments will be served following the program.
Waymart
• Waymart American Legion Post 889 will conduct a Memorial Day Program, including the 'Missing Man Table' Ceremony, on Monday, May 25th, 2009 at 2 p.m. in Waymart's Wayside Park on Belmont St. (PA Route 296).
 In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held indoors at the Post on Water St. (off Belmont St., behind the Wayne Bank).  All are welcome.
