If you are driving up Hancock Highway, (Route 191,) after 2 p.m. on May 10th, open your car window and listen for lively country music emanating from Indian Head Camp in Lookout. Turn in for a visit to the 13th Annual Country Jamboree.
Al and Mary Hazen of Equinunk are said to be embarrassed when you call attention to their dedication to this event which has raised upwards of $40,000 over its brief history, all of which goes to Geisinger Pediatric Services at the Geisinger Medical Center, through the Miracle Network Telethon. They will hasten to tell you that the event's success is due primarily to the hard work of the volunteers who turn out to help year in and year out, and to the generosity of local businesses who support the event with amazing gifts to be won and awarded, and to the members of the public who come each year to support this important cause.
When asked why they continue this work, Mary will tell you that when a member of her family needed the services of the hospital, the hopeful faces of children undergoing chemotherapy, who uncomplaining wear their IV's and bald heads with pride, moved them to think, "There must be something we can do."  With a grateful nod to the owners of Indian Head Camp, each year the Country Jamboree continues to feature fun for everyone, with face-painting, and children's games, square and round dancing to live bands, a penny social, raffle, Chinese auction, and lots of food.
The event helps to make people aware of the outstanding medical facility an easy ride from our area. The success of the Telethon has enabled Geisinger Medical Center to add an entire wing to the hospital.
Admission is only $5.00 and children under 12 are free.
