”I like helping people learn”, explained Marietta Mendler. A ninth grade student at Honesdale High School, Marietta plays and tutors piano and has been playing clarinet in the school band since fifth grade.
“I’ve been tutoring for a long time”, she said. “I think it’s fun to help other people learn and become more interested in something. I enjoy seeing how they react to and interpret the music.”
Marietta enjoys being active in the community, having been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. “I really like girl scouting. It’s fun to help out and participate in a lot of the different activities. We just went caroling for the elderly on Tuesday night, and a while back we threw a princess party for the younger girls.”
As if all those activities weren’t enough, she has been officially volunteering at the library since she was 10, and has been helping out since she was eight. In school, she enjoys participating in the band and takes a special interest in her reading, history, and biology classes. She plans on attending college after graduating high school, and although she is unsure of what she will major in, she plans on minoring in the performing arts.
No matter where the future takes her, one thing is for certain: Marietta loves to get involved. “I think being involved is good for everything”, she explained. “It’s good to be involved socially, and it helps to give you an idea of what kind of things are out there, what certain jobs are like, it helps you get into college, and it’s just a lot of fun.”
