All four of Canaan Christian Academy’s basketball teams were in action Thursday evening for the final time before Christmas break.

The Eagles traveled all the way to Vestal (NY) for a full slate of games with longtime rival Ross Corners...and the results were decidedly mixed.

Canaan’s jayvee teams each played well and came home with impressive victories.
The young Eagles fell behind after one quarter, but then dominated the second en route to an eventual 54-39 win. The girls pushed their undefeated streak to an incredible 70 consecutive games, 31-25.

“We got off to a fast start,” Coach John Ashley told TWI Sports. “But, Ross Corners is a good team and they pushed us all game long. Our girls did a great job clamping down on them in the second half and that was the difference.”

Meanwhile, on the varsity hardwood, Canaan put up a gallant struggle but came out on the short end in both contests.

The Eagles were outscored in every period on their way to a 63-53 defeat. Canaan’s girls were held to single-digit scoring in three of four quarters and absorbed a 38-28 loss.

“Our girls came up against a fast team that uses an aggressive, trapping defense,” Coach Ashley said. “They disrupted our whole offense and grounded the running game.”

CCA is now off on holiday hiatus until after the New Year. Canaan’s hoops teams will be back in action on Friday, January 4th with a quartet of ballgames at Leah Christian.

A Jayvee Sweep

The young Eagles tipped-off the evening with a solid victory over host Ross Corners. Canaan’s jayvee team dug itself an early hole, but exploded right before intermission to take control of the game.

Shawn Beals and Joe Chupick rose to the rescue for the Eagles. Beals hit a pair of long distance treys and enjoyed a perfect 8-for-8 stint at the stripe. He finished with a game-high 20 points. Chupick contributed 16 points to Canaan’s cause and also handed out five assists.

Daryl Draidfort also played a major role in the win. The talented young post player tallied eight points and eight boards.

Nick Chupick (six pts) and Jordan Peck (two pts) rounded out CCA’s scoring.
On the girls side of the ledger, Canaan built an early lead and withstood a furious fourth quarter rally for a 31-25 win.

Kay Black narrowly missed a double-double, muscling her way to a game-high 11 points and nine rebounds.

Becky Misiura and Ashlea Swingle also turned in stellar all-round performances. Misiura scored nine points and snagged three steals. Swingle hit for eight points, recorded four rebounds and four steals.

Theresa Black (five boards) and Karen Black (three points) rounded out the CCA attack.

The Lady Eagle girls jayvee team hasn’t lost a single game since its inception. Canaan has won 70 straight games dating back to 2001.

Tough Losses

Canaan’s boys varsity team fell behind 14-11 after one quarter and never recovered in what became a disappointing 10-point setback.

“Even though we lost, this was a great game and a good learning experience for the boys,” Coach Ashley said. “They threw a suffocating 1-2-2 press at us and it gave us some problems. But, overall I was pleased with how handled it.”

Canaan actually took a short-lived lead, 37-36, in the waning moments of the third quarter. However, behind a 19-point outburst from Mike Shea, Ross Corners held on for the win.

Josiah Misiura and Nick Schweinsburg combined to lead the Eagle assault. Both players erupted for a double-double, keeping things close all throughout the contest.
Misiura tallied 21 points on the strength of six field goals and an 8-for-11 performance at the free throw line. Schweinsburg scored in every quarter en route to a 12-point night. He also chipped in with 10 boards.

Also finding their way into the scorebook for CCA were: James Bond (six pts), Ryan Hol-lingshead (five pts), Shawn Beals (five pts), Nick DiPalma (two).

Ross Corners dominated in the early going of the girls varsity game. The home team out-scored the Lady Eagles 12-3 in the opening stanza.

Stephanie Thompson and Sarah Schweinsburg led the Canaan offense.
Thompson, the Lady Eagle point guard, tallied six points (including one trey) and recorded three steals. Schweinsburg also contributed six points.

Both girls battled foul trouble all night and ended with four apiece.

Canaan played its hosts to a 13-13 stalemate after the break, but never overcame Ross Corners’ opening run.

Rounding out the scoring for CCA were: Courtney Swingle (four pts, six rebounds, four blocks); Faith VanDeLinde (four pts); Amanda Chupick (four pts); Eliza VanDeLinde and Charity Smith (two pts each).

“In the end, our girls just couldn’t adjust their style of play in time to overcome that first quarter deficit,” said Coach Ashley. “Even though we were in serious foul trouble, the girls refused to fold.”
