This is just a sneak peek at the story TWI Sports is developing for Wednesday's edition.
Honesdale and Wyoming Valley West battled to a 1-1 stalemate through 110 minutes of field hockey action Monday night in Plymouth.
The Lady Hornets and Spartans each managed a goal in regulation, then remained deadlocked following two 15-minute overtime periods. After that, this District Two semifinal went to a shootout...but, even one of those wasn't enough.
With a big, enthusiastic crowd shouting itself hoarse, these evenly-matches squads carried the action to a second shootout. Finally...after more than three hours of action...Valley West ended Honesdale's magical run.
Maura Anistranski and Dominique Pasqualichio each beat an exhausted Katie Carton for a goal, giving the Spartans a marathon victory. With the win, Valley West advances to the Class AAA championship game against either Wilkes Barre Coughlin or Lackawanna Trail.
"My girls are all crying...they're just heartbroken," an emotionally drained Becca Maciejewski told TWI Sports afterward. "I'm so proud of them. This has been an amazing season. It's a shame either team had to lose tonight."
Score by Periods...
HON (7-8-0) 1 0 0 0 - 1
WVW (13-4-0) 0 1 0 0 - 1
Shootout #1: 2-2
Shootout #2: 2-1, Valley West
